Sunday March 23rd will see the official Grand Opening of Knebworth Tennis Club’s new clubhouse by Stephen McPartland MP. The club’s previous club hut was burnt down in June 2011 leaving players and guests without facilities on the Rec.  But two and a half years of fundraising and hard work by members’, particularly by Club Chairman Neil Stevenson, has paid-off and the club now has a clubhouse to be proud of. Bigger than the previous club hut at 5.9m x 5.5m, the new £22,000 wooden facility now has a patio area, running water, kitchen facilities and a lounge area; toilet facilities will be installed at a later date when a drainage connection can be agreed and installed. Fit-out is still continuing with club members’ doing most of the work so a BIG thank you to all those getting involved!

The club would especially like to thank the Knebworth Village Trust, the NHDC Area Committee, and the Herts. CC Discretionary Fund for their very kind and generous support. Thank you.

New ClubhouseThe club would like to invite EVERYONE to come along on Sunday 23rd March, from 2pm, to the clubhouse Grand Opening and help support your local tennis club. The club has invited Stephen McPartland MP for Stevenage to cut the ribbon, along with guests from the Parish, NHDC and the wider community who have helped support us. Refreshments will be served and this will be a great opportunity to come along and meet your local club.

The good news does not stop at the new clubhouse! In September 2013 Sport England awarded the club a grant of £40,000 to install floodlights. This is brilliant news as the lighting will allow members to play later during the winter months and make more use of the courts throughout the year. Thank you so much to Sport England and to Jonathan Thurgood, Club Captain, for his efforts with the grant application. The club will now be engaging with our neighbours on Stevenage Road, and with the Parish Council to seek planning permission.

Knebworth Tennis Club is your local friendly club. Our 4 outdoor all-weather courts are situated on Knebworth Recreation Ground behind Stevenage Road and Oakfields Road, next to the Bowls Club. The Club runs a variety of social (Club Sessions) and competitive tennis throughout the year for both adult and junior members. April to September the club runs a number of adult tournaments at Knebworth where players of all abilities are encouraged to enter; we also run weekly coaching sessions for adults and juniors by LTA accredited coaches. During winter the club continues to play at Knebworth but October through March the club also runs fortnightly indoor tennis at Gosling in Welwyn Garden City. As a member of the club you also have the opportunity to take part in other local inter-club competitions e.g. Datchworth (Summer & Autumn) League, East Herts Winter and Hot Rackets Leagues.

If you would like to know more about what is happening at the club please visit our website at: www.knebworthtennisclub.co.uk or come along to one of our Club Sessions and have a chat. For all general enquiries please email us at Click Here or for membership enquiries please email Phil Skone, Club Membership Secretary at Click Here.

Knebworth Park Cricket Club is hoping to come up in the world, but fortunately not move out of the village. The Club has put in an application for three cricket pitches and a clubhouse with bar and social area opposite the Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth. The application, 14/00132/11, can be viewed on North Herts. District Council website.

For motorists in Hertfordshire looking for a new car that packs a powerful punch, Marshall Vauxhall is on hand with a record-breaking suggestion!

The local Vauxhall retailer with sites in Knebworth and Welwyn Garden City is inviting customers to give their consideration to the manufacturer’s stylish Astra, after the model flew full pelt into the World and UK record books last month.

The model was acknowledged by motorsport’s governing bodies after its attempt to set or break 18 World and UK Speed Endurance Records was confirmed as successful. This achievement showcases the vehicle’s exceptional reliability and places the model as an ideal choice for those who appreciate a powerful performance.

Record breakerRecord-breaker
In the autumn of last year, Vauxhall attempted two sets of speed endurance records: 12 in the FIA’s* 1600-2000cc forced-induction diesel production car class, and a further six in the MSA’s* 1500-2000cc forced-induction diesel production car class.

The lead Astra 2.0 CDTi 165PS in the challenge covered a total of over 3,000 miles in 24 hours, over 1,500 laps of a  tortuous banked circuit at an average of just over 125mph, only stopping for fuel and a single, cautionary change of tyres.

All 18 records were achieved, with key records such as the World 1-hour, 6-hour, and 12-hour broken conclusively, and the long-standing UK 24-hour, which was smashed by 25mph.

Popular Reformed Church Minister Rev’d. John Steele has now retired. John went out with a definite spring in his step at his retirement Ceilidh – a kind of barn dance. Trinity is a united Reformed Church/Methodist congregation so the next minister will be from the Methodist tradition, and is expected to be in post from August.

Liz Kirby and her friend started running training in January 2011 in preparation for a 10k charity run. Mow they are fitter than ever and totally hooked on the buzz they get from running; so much so that they decided to look for a local running club. Then it occurred to them, why drive to a running club when there are lots of beautiful running routes around Knebworth?

If you are interested in helping create or join a Knebworth runners' network, please contact Liz at lizkirby63@gmail.com. It doesn't matter what your motivation is - competition, getting fitter or simply becoming better acquainted with your fellow villagers.
