It may surprise you to learn that Leprosy is still wide-spread, and India is one of the countries where it is most prevalent. I am delighted to report that the reputation of Roger Hammond’s authentic Indian Cuisine goes before him. All 60 tickets for the Indian Night organised by his wife Janet in aid of the Leprosy Mission on February 1st have already sold out! Now wouldn’t all event organisers like to be able to report that?

It can’t happen often that a local postman gets to deliver two congratulatory cards from her Majesty in the space of a fortnight. The cusp of the year, though, saw two big events in Knebworth. Congratulations to Gwen Garland, 100 on December 20th and to John and Betty Bland, who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on January 2nd. I am told that Gwen was so excited she couldn’t sleep and rang her daughter at one minute past midnight to say ‘I’ve made it!’.

Vauxhall retailer, Marshall Vauxhall, is urging motorists in Hertfordshire to get ready for the cold road ahead after new research reveals that just under half of drivers will be preparing their car for winter travel this year. The poll, commissioned by Vauxhall, identified that almost a third of drivers admit they don’t know what the legal minimum tread is for tyres, and that a quarter of motorists in the East will not be storing anything in their car this winter to help them cope with unpredictable weather, meaning that many may not be properly equipped should travel troubles arise. In response to the research findings, the retailer which has sites in Knebworth and Welwyn Garden City, is on hand to ensure safe journeys all winter long for motorists and their passengers.

With over a fifth of motorists in the area failing to prepare for winter weather, there’s never been a better time for drivers to brush up on their knowledge and check that their car is capable and properly kitted out. Encouragingly however, for those who are planning to prepare, it would appear that torches, blankets and water are the top three items to pack. Meanwhile, over a quarter will be keeping food such as sweet and chocolate, as well as hot drinks, in their car.

The research coincides with Vauxhall’s Winter Safety Check campaign, which enables drivers to take advantage of a thorough inspection of their vehicle by highly trained Vauxhall technicians and offers the reassurance that cars will be fit for travel in wintry conditions.

Safe Winter Travel
A Vauxhall Winter Safety Check costs from just £25 and is a great-value way for Vauxhall owners to enjoy peace of mind this winter.

Winter ServiceThe team of Vauxhall MasterFit trained technicians, at Marshall Vauxhall, will inspect a vehicle’s brakes, tyres, exhaust, steering, wiper blades and much more, as well as checking engine oil, brake fluid and radiator coolant, topping-up where necessary.

Customers who take advantage of a Winter Safety Check before 28th February 2014 will get a free Winter Survival Pack worth more than £20 RRP to take away with them. The free pack includes a high visibility jacket, Autoglym De-Icer, a mini foldable shovel, ice scraper and mini wind-up torch, offering drivers the reassurance that they are fully equipped, whatever the weather.

Safe Winter Travel Tips

  • Ensure footwear is dry and free from dirt or snow before driving
  • Pull away in second gear, easing off the clutch slowly to avoid wheel-spin
  • Increase normal braking distance and apply brakes gently. Release brake and de-clutch if the car skids
  • When going uphill, use higher gears, keep a constant speed and choose an appropriate gear well in advance
  • When traveling downhill, use a low gear and try to avoid using the brakes
  • Ensure tyres have adequate tread (1.6mm is the legal minimum)
  • Don’t forget to carry AutoSock Snow Socks; they’re a quick and easy solution for driving on icy and snowy surfaces

Guards, guards, guardsKATS – Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society – planned to stage Terry Pratchett’s Guards! Guards! By Stephen Briggs in November.
Unfortunately the key technician, Graham Dormer, had a heart attack on the Saturday at the beginning of performance week. We are delighted that Graham is now on the road to recovery and is able to provide the lighting and sound effects – plus a flying dragon – when we stage the play on 23-25 January.

Liz Kirby and her friend started running training in January 2011 in preparation for a 10k charity run. Mow they are fitter than ever and totally hooked on the buzz they get from running; so much so that they decided to look for a local running club. Then it occurred to them, why drive to a running club when there are lots of beautiful running routes around Knebworth?

If you are interested in helping create or join a Knebworth runners' network, please contact Liz at lizkirby63@gmail.com. It doesn't matter what your motivation is - competition, getting fitter or simply becoming better acquainted with your fellow villagers.
