HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING ARRANGEMENTS

Now that the new household recycling arrangements have come into force, here is what we're supposed to be doing:

New Bins
Select this image for a larger view

The new purple bin (180 litres capacity), is for non-recyclable rubbish, such as used cling film, or is that plastic? Tin foil wrap, or does that qualify as a flattened out tin? Old torch batteries, broken light bulbs and now I'm beginning to struggle with what else should go into the new, 180 litres, purple bin. Can anyone enlighten me? I don't want the rubbish police knocking on my door at midnight.

The old grey bin is now free for all recyclable waste, except paper, but including cardboard, textiles and clothes, cartons, glass, plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays and lastly, tins, cans and aerosols. Remember to only throw out your old clothes and textiles towards the end of the collection period, as they "must be in bags" (not black sacks) and placed on the top of all the other rubbish in the grey bin, but still contained within the confines of the closed lid. Presumably, as we can't put old clothes into a black sack, we must use a different coloured sack or an old supermarket plastic bag, which only the detestable, irresponsible shoppers amongst us will still have available; responsible shoppers will have purchased half a dozen re-usable shopping bags, made out of eco-friendly canvas or leather (as long as they are not vegan). If you are a responsible recycler, you will have to use a bag made from cardboard, glass, plastic (not black) or tin; otherwise expect a late night visit for mixing rubbish types within dedicated bins.

Is everyone clear about the new system and are you happy with the collection arrangements? If you have any questions don't ask me, email service@north-herts.gov.uk or call 01462 474000.

Addendum: During a moment of epiphany, I realised what the new purple bins are for; it is somewhere to dump the black plastic sacks that you have used to transfer the recyclable rubbish from your home to the appropriately coloured bin.

KNEBWORTH RUNNERS NETWORK

Liz Kirby and her friend started running training in January 2011 in preparation for a 10k charity run. Mow they are fitter than ever and totally hooked on the buzz they get from running; so much so that they decided to look for a local running club. Then it occurred to them, why drive to a running club when there are lots of beautiful running routes around Knebworth?

If you are interested in helping create or join a Knebworth runners' network, please contact Liz at lizkirby63@gmail.com. It doesn't matter what your motivation is - competition, getting fitter or simply becoming better acquainted with your fellow villagers.
