Research carried out by the Hertfordshire Society for the Blind has found that the cost to local authorities of providing eye care to Hertfordshire residents may increase by 73% in the next decade. This increase is due to the ageing population in the Hertfordshire area - by 2020, the number of over 65s in Hertfordshire is expected to increase by 22% (compared with the number in 2010). Due to the prevalence of visual impairments in older people, this means that approximately 29% more people will have a visual impairment in Hertfordshire by 2020.

"Our research has found that the costs of providing eye care in Hertfordshire will spiral over the next decade," said Maria Surgenor, Chief Executive Officer of Hertfordshire Society for the Blind (HSB). "We currently support 5,500 people with sight loss in Hertfordshire and are worried that we will struggle to cope with the future demand, particularly as the charity had its funding cut by 25 percent last year."

Six months on they are fitter than ever and totally hooked on the buzz they get from running; so much so that they decided to look for a local running club. Then it occurred to them, why drive to a running club when there are lots of beautiful running routes around Knebworth?

If you are interested in helping create or join a Knebworth runners' network, please contact Liz at lizkirby63@gmail.com. It doesn't matter what your motivation is - competition, getting fitter or simply becoming better acquainted with your fellow villagers. Let's get started.
